Non-Creepy Mansion | Specifically Under Derek's Bed | Tuesday Afternoon

It was dangerous when Stiles got bored. He tended to create little "projects" for himself that really had no point but were something he'd quickly become obsessed with and the next thing you know Sheriff Stilinski can't find anything in the kitchen because Stiles decided to organize the pantry and fridge by expiration date.

Which probably explained why his dad paid for the portal ticket back to Fandom.

Stiles' latest project was going through the clothes they had in the bedroom to pick out stuff he wanted to bring to Beacon Hills and get the rest sorted in ROYGBIV order if Derek didn't come home in time to stop him. The closet had been taken care of, as had the dresser drawers. Now he was under the bed, trying to find clothes that had either gotten kicked under there or dragged in by Puppy Joe.

Boxers, t-shirts and socks he had been expecting. What he hadn't been expecting was a tiny black box that he had never seen before. Too lazy to wriggle out from under the bed (it had taken way too much shifting to get under there in the first place), Stiles brought out his phone and turned on the flashlight so he could see what was inside.

Did it count as an invasion of privacy if this was pretty much your bedroom?

When Stiles opened the box to find a ring he decided that, yes, this was an invasion of Derek's privacy. Because the ring was silver colored (though Stiles guessed it was platinum because this was Derek we were talking about) and there was a triskelion engraved in it. If Stiles were brave enough he would guess that it'd fit his ring finger if he tried it on.

Stiles let out a shaky breath. He definitely wasn't supposed to find this.

"Yeah! Yeah, I'm fine!" Just ignore the fact that his heart was pounding like crazy.

Derek frowned, starting up the stairs at that. "If you've broken something, I'm not telling your dad."

"I'm fine," he said again. "You just scared me and I hit my head."

"...okay." Stiles' heart was beating too fast to decide if it was true.

"I don't think I have a concussion." Though he might be in the middle of a heart attack.

"That's not making me think you're okay," Derek informed him, poking his head into the bedroom. "...why are there piles of clothing?"

"I was, uh, organizing them?"

[justlurkinghere]

"Stiles."

[robinonadderall]

"I was bored!" Stiles protested. "The closet looks fine now. I was mostly done with the drawers..."

[justlurkinghere]

"That doesn't explain why you're all--" He waved at Stiles' chest, scenting the air like there was a threat hiding somewhere in the room.

"All what?" Yes, let's drag this out a little while Stiles decided whether he could pull off a lie or not.

HE COULD NOT.

"I can hear your heartbeat." That wasn't creepy or weird to say. "Did you have a panic attack or something?"

And now he looked all earnestly concerned.

He shook his head. "I was just, uh, under the bed."

[justlurkinghere]

That got Derek to jerk his head back before he flushed red. "Oh."

He really should have picked a better hiding spot. But, in his defense, Stiles never cleaned and the odds of him looking there were slim.

"Yeah," Stiles said, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck. "Sorry, I didn't mean to--"

To go through his boyfriend's stuff and not ignore a closed box when he saw it.

"It's fine," Derek said quickly, cutting him off. "It's not like you wouldn't see it. Later."

Yes.

"Still kind of feels like I ruined a surprise."

[justlurkinghere]

"I just thought after Friday, it was as good a time as any to buy one."

And not a sure sign of relationship death. Like the tattoo on his chest. Derek was just bad at these things.

Stiles didn't have the greatest track record when it come to being sane about these things either. The Lydia thing was a big hint at that.

"You just bought it?" he asked. "That kind of explains the lame hiding spot."

"I was going to wait until you were done with school." Well, done with pre-grad.

[robinonadderall]

"I know." Now that Stiles knew Derek wasn't going to get mad about snooping he was calming down some. Though he was still feeling a sort of giddy excitement because of the fact that the ring existed in the first place. "But Friday changed your mind."

"A little," he admitted. "Now we don't have to live in a state just for a marriage license."

And the whole adoption thing was settled.

"That's a nice sort of freedom," he agreed with a smile. "I like the ring. For the record."

"Did you try it on?"

They were terribly sappy people.

Stiles shook his head. "Didn't feel right without the whole dropping down on one knee, you putting the ring on me thing."
