Non-Creepy Mansion | Specifically Under Derek's Bed | Tuesday Afternoon

It was dangerous when Stiles got bored. He tended to create little "projects" for himself that really had no point but were something he'd quickly become obsessed with and the next thing you know Sheriff Stilinski can't find anything in the kitchen because Stiles decided to organize the pantry and fridge by expiration date.

Which probably explained why his dad paid for the portal ticket back to Fandom.

Stiles' latest project was going through the clothes they had in the bedroom to pick out stuff he wanted to bring to Beacon Hills and get the rest sorted in ROYGBIV order if Derek didn't come home in time to stop him. The closet had been taken care of, as had the dresser drawers. Now he was under the bed, trying to find clothes that had either gotten kicked under there or dragged in by Puppy Joe.

Boxers, t-shirts and socks he had been expecting. What he hadn't been expecting was a tiny black box that he had never seen before. Too lazy to wriggle out from under the bed (it had taken way too much shifting to get under there in the first place), Stiles brought out his phone and turned on the flashlight so he could see what was inside.

Did it count as an invasion of privacy if this was pretty much your bedroom?

When Stiles opened the box to find a ring he decided that, yes, this was an invasion of Derek's privacy. Because the ring was silver colored (though Stiles guessed it was platinum because this was Derek we were talking about) and there was a triskelion engraved in it. If Stiles were brave enough he would guess that it'd fit his ring finger if he tried it on.

Stiles let out a shaky breath. He definitely wasn't supposed to find this.

Stiles didn't have the greatest track record when it come to being sane about these things either. The Lydia thing was a big hint at that.

"You just bought it?" he asked. "That kind of explains the lame hiding spot."

"I was going to wait until you were done with school." Well, done with pre-grad.

"I know." Now that Stiles knew Derek wasn't going to get mad about snooping he was calming down some. Though he was still feeling a sort of giddy excitement because of the fact that the ring existed in the first place. "But Friday changed your mind."

"A little," he admitted. "Now we don't have to live in a state just for a marriage license."

And the whole adoption thing was settled.

"That's a nice sort of freedom," he agreed with a smile. "I like the ring. For the record."

"Did you try it on?"

They were terribly sappy people.

Stiles shook his head. "Didn't feel right without the whole dropping down on one knee, you putting the ring on me thing."

Derek snorted, moving forward to kiss him. "You dad would kill me if I proposed right now."

Stiles smiled, wrapping his arms around Derek's neck. "I don't think he would."

"You're nineteen. He really would."

No, he'd just give them disapproving looks and sigh a lot.

"So I'm just supposed to sit still knowing you've got a ring hidden under the bed?" he asked.

"I could put it in the sock drawer," Derek teased.

Stiles sighed. "You're a tease. A ring tease."

Ignore the fact that Derek had been hiding it.

Derek rolled his eyes. "You have it?"

Stiles let go of Derek in order to crouch down and pick the box up from where he hastily tried to re-hide it in his scramble to get out from under the bed. "If you had been away a little bit longer I would have totally been able to hide the fact that I found it."

He would not.

"Uh huh." Derek totally bought that. He took the box from Stiles, opening it up to look at.

"Should have known you'd have good taste," Stiles said. "Either that or I figured you'd get a really embarrassing one shaped like a wolf."

He would have worn it anyway.

Hey, he... probably hadn't thought about doing that.

"I could switch it out for that."

[robinonadderall]

Stiles chuckled. "We can buy one as my engagement ring for you."

[justlurkinghere]

Derek rolled his eyes. "You're so sweet."

Then he gave Stiles a serious look before stepping back to turn the case around to show it to him. Again. "If you're willing to wait for the actual ceremony..."

"Well, duh, I'm nineteen and--" Oh. Oh this was a thing that was happening. Stiles looked from Derek to the ring and back again. "Are you--?"

"You did sort of ruin the surprise," Derek joked, politely getting down on one knee if that helped Stiles figure it out. "I had a plan for this originally."

[robinonadderall]

Stiles' mouth dropped open because, yep, this was happening. "A plan?"

[justlurkinghere]

"It was going to be at your graduation and I'd as your dad to help surprise you," Derek muttered. "I kind of just jumped the gun on buying the ring."

He got too excited, okay?

"That would have been sweet," he said, stepping forward to run his hands through Derek's hair. "But I like this too. It's more...us."

Stiles messing everything up and them rushing into what could be a terrible decision? Totally them.
