So work had been a distraction, but sadly he couldn't stay there all evening. Even with the dog and other people in the house it was kind of depressing to show up and not have Derek there. Even if he was still kind of annoyed with him.

After feeding Puppy Joe he shuffled upstairs for a change a clothes 'cause if he was going to mope around he was going to do it comfortably.

Derek had reluctantly left Cora alone to come back to Fandom, her number in his phone and more than a few obnoxious texts that made him feel warm and fuzzy even if they were all insults.

Which meant now he was silently moving through the house to hunt Stiles down. All the way up to the bedroom. Which meant creepy watching instead of saying hi like a normal person.

Stiles was lost in his own thoughts anyway so even if he had been observant to that sort of stuff (which he wasn't) he wouldn't have noticed Derek was there anyway. So he just kept on with what he came up there to do, stripping off his shirt and rifling through the drawers to find one of Derek's to put on.

You were acting like a stalker from an 80's teen slasher flick now, Derek.

He was not! He was acting like a normal person. Really.

"Hey."

Stiles jumped, immediately covering himself up with a shirt. Because, you know, if someone was actually attacking his nipples being exposed would be the worst thing to happen. "Jesus, Derek, you scared the hell out of me!"

"You were busy."

No, Derek was just a creeper.

Stiles crossed his arms over his chest and looked surly. 'Cause he was a surly lil' man these days. "You didn't tell me you'd be back today."

"Cora said she didn't like me enough to deal with my relationship crap." Her words.

That sounded like Cora but Stiles, of course, couldn't just accept the excuse. "Was it just that? Or did you want to catch me off guard to make sure I didn't try to stick my head in the oven while you were away?"

Someone might have still been mad about Wednesday's conversation.

Derek's mouth went tight at that. "You want me to go?"

"It's your house." So, no.

"Yours too."

He managed to make that sound surly. It was a gift he had.

Guys, the house didn't belong to either of you. It was Mike's house.

"I can go back to my room." And they could start this whole awkward not talking thing all over again just when it started to get a little better.

Derek went all tense at that. If he'd been a wolf, his fur would have been all puffed up. "No. We're talking."

Wow, those were word he thought Derek would never say. It was hard to say no to that since it happened so rarely.

"Okay, talk." You brought it up so you had to go first, Derek.

Derek sighed like a drama queen, stalking over to the bed to sit down. "Do you want me to lie to you about this?"

"No," he replied. "I want you to stop being afraid of what you think I might do. I've had enough of that lately."

He was not going to forget Melissa being afraid to even touch his wrist any time soon, or his father having to look at other people for assurance before believing it was safe to touch him.

"I can't just--just shut it off," Derek snapped.

"So what am I supposed to do?" he asked. "You don't trust me enough to believe anything I say!"

"Not right now, no!" This was going swimmingly. Derek huffed, forcing himself to turn the volume down. "I need time. You're not getting over things in a hurry either. Are you?"

"You know that I'm not," Stiles said irritably. "But this is different. How is time going to help this? Like if I go one month without trying to disembowel myself you'll finally believe me?"

"I don't know," Derek said, shoulders hunched defensively.

"Why do you even want me here?" he asked. "If I'm just going to worry you all the time, then why haven't you told me to go?"

"Do you want to go?" Derek asked with his poor eyes on full blast.

"I want to stop hurting you."

"It's not--you're not--" he made a frustrated noise. "I think you're worth it."
