Stiles had gotten better from whatever devil sickness he had about three days into his stay at Beacon Hills but his dad had kept coming up with excuses of why he should stay. Which Stiles found sort of suspicious because, hi, he had school. Then Scott had told him about the texts Isaac had been sending him about the crazy shit going down in Fandom and it had all made sense. He should have never given Derek his dad's number, what a dumb move.

He felt like he should have been angrier than he was, but in truth he was just so exhausted from his trip that he didn't care. Being that close to the nemeton wasn't great for his already crappy sleeping habits and it worried him that Scott seemed more together than he was. Stiles felt kind of like an asshole for being worried about that, but whatever.

It was getting pretty late by the time he made it back to the island and it just seemed like he was programmed to go to the mansion instead of his dorm room these days. He didn't actually remember walking there from the causeway, which he was crediting to typical ADHD zoning out rather than something nemeton-related and worrying. He scooped up Puppy Joe when he came to the door to greet him and headed into the kitchen for a soda or something. Because clearly caffeine was needed this late at night.

"You're just about as bad a liar as he is," Stiles said, putting Puppy Joe down on the floor before flopping on the couch. "I know it's no use trying to argue with you on this, but I did want you to know that I know what happened last week so you don't think I'm an idiot or something."

Also he was too tired to fight.

"I don't think you're an idiot." The other way around was debateable.

"Really? Because thinking I wouldn't figure this out kind of makes it seem like you think I'm an idiot." Stiles shifted around on the couch until he was on his stomach. He had already decided he was gonna end up sleeping here tonight, dammit.

"That sounds rough to have happen to you," Derek replied dryly. If he was tossing a blanket at him in a way that undermined his apathy, then so be it.

"You're not even sorry, are you?" Stiles pulled that blanket right off. Because he didn't need Derek's help...

...okay he'd pick it back up later when he got cold.

Derek took a breath at that. "Are you?"

"Sometimes," he admitted.

That was a tricky answer to take as actually meaning something real. "You already knew."

Oh yeah, bring that up.

"Doesn't mean I don't want to hear it from you," Stiles said, curling his arms around one of the tiny couch pillows. "But Scott oh-so-helpfully pointed out that I really don't have a case to be mad here since I do the same thing to you."

Fucking Scott and his stupid ass observations that happened to be true.

"And yet you're still mad at me."

"I'm not mad," he said. "Am I yelling? No. So not mad."

Such logic.

Derek rolled his eyes, going to take a seat on one of the chairs. And promptly had a fluff ball in his lap. So ruining his chances of looking serious, Puppy Joe.

Stiles peaked up from the pillow to look at Derek. "I'm not mad."

He was...mildly frustrated.

"Really." This was his not believing you face.

"Really," he repeated. "I mean, you could have died and I wouldn't have known, but why would I want to know about that?"

"Sounds familiar." Derek was so not having this.

"I know." Ugh he was such a hypocrite. "Which is why I'm not mad."

"...okay." Look more suspicious, Derek. "What happened?"

Did he need to talk to your dad again?

Stiles bit back the initial urge to answer with 'nothing' because that wouldn't help anything at all. "Being near the nemeton is...hard."

Which meant Derek froze right on up. Damn it, Stiles! Was he supposed to say something here or not?

Luckily Stiles was used to every Derek everywhere answering him with silence, so he just kept on going. But not before putting his face back into the pillow. 'Cause it was hard enough just sharing this stuff.

"All that stuff is just intensified," he continued, sounding muffled from the pillow. "I have a harder time knowing what's real and what isn't."

Stiles tensed up as he speaking, shoulders hunching like he was afraid he was about to be judged or called crazy or something.

Telling the truth really kind of sucked. No wonder he hadn't made a habit of it.

His silence was an awkward one, okay? Awkward!

"You could ask someone you trust."

"And I'm sure that won't distress you at all." Why, yes, Derek was the first person he thought of then. "You didn't sign up for this."

OH GOD, THIS HEARTBURN. IT WAS TERRIBLE.

"You think it's better for people when you try to hide it?" People. Yes. People in general.

"No. I don't like hiding things from you." Sorry, he wasn't following your people in general cues, Derek. "It's easier to try to hide it."
