Stiles had gotten better from whatever devil sickness he had about three days into his stay at Beacon Hills but his dad had kept coming up with excuses of why he should stay. Which Stiles found sort of suspicious because, hi, he had school. Then Scott had told him about the texts Isaac had been sending him about the crazy shit going down in Fandom and it had all made sense. He should have never given Derek his dad's number, what a dumb move.

He felt like he should have been angrier than he was, but in truth he was just so exhausted from his trip that he didn't care. Being that close to the nemeton wasn't great for his already crappy sleeping habits and it worried him that Scott seemed more together than he was. Stiles felt kind of like an asshole for being worried about that, but whatever.

It was getting pretty late by the time he made it back to the island and it just seemed like he was programmed to go to the mansion instead of his dorm room these days. He didn't actually remember walking there from the causeway, which he was crediting to typical ADHD zoning out rather than something nemeton-related and worrying. He scooped up Puppy Joe when he came to the door to greet him and headed into the kitchen for a soda or something. Because clearly caffeine was needed this late at night.

"When did you get back?" WHY DIDN'T THE SHERIFF WARN HIM?

Because Derek hadn't checked his phone.

"About fifteen minutes ago," Stiles said, shifting Puppy Joe under his arm while he fished around in the fridge. "Hello to you too."

"You're not sick." WEREWOLF POWERS.

[robinonadderall]

"No kidding," he said. "It wasn't as terminal as I thought it was."

"Gee. Really."

[robinonadderall]

"Hey, if you're allowed to make 'no duh' statements about me not being sick then so am I," Stiles said, finally finding a coke and shutting the fridge door closed with his foot.

"You should have water." Let him smother you, Stiles. Let it happen.

Stiles responded to that by opening his coke. One handed because the other was still holding a poof ball.

Derek just sighed at that. Because he was deeply put upon.

He was an almost-adult who would drink what he pleased when he pleased!

"So how was your week?"

[justlurkinghere]

"Fine." He dug something up. "Yours?"

[robinonadderall]

"Felt better around day three, became suspicious about my dad being more than okay with me not returning to classes around day five," Stiles said. "And then on day six Scott told me about these texts he was getting from Isaac about blowing up the street outside the Kwik Stop because the town was being taken over."

This is why no one liked Isaac. "It happens."

Stiles took a pointed sip of his soda before moving to go into the living room. "That's not why I gave you my dad's number."

"You want to tell him we're not allowed to talk?" GO AHEAD.

[robinonadderall]

"Oh, you can talk to each other. Become best friends for all I care." No, that would be weird. "But you're not allowed to team up and become some sort of overprotective superpower."

"Maybe he just wanted to see you." That was true, but not the reason for the past week.

[robinonadderall]

"You're just about as bad a liar as he is," Stiles said, putting Puppy Joe down on the floor before flopping on the couch. "I know it's no use trying to argue with you on this, but I did want you to know that I know what happened last week so you don't think I'm an idiot or something."

Also he was too tired to fight.

"I don't think you're an idiot." The other way around was debateable.

[robinonadderall]

"Really? Because thinking I wouldn't figure this out kind of makes it seem like you think I'm an idiot." Stiles shifted around on the couch until he was on his stomach. He had already decided he was gonna end up sleeping here tonight, dammit.

[justlurkinghere]

"That sounds rough to have happen to you," Derek replied dryly. If he was tossing a blanket at him in a way that undermined his apathy, then so be it.

"You're not even sorry, are you?" Stiles pulled that blanket right off. Because he didn't need Derek's help...

...okay he'd pick it back up later when he got cold.

Derek took a breath at that. "Are you?"

[robinonadderall]

"Sometimes," he admitted.

[justlurkinghere]

That was a tricky answer to take as actually meaning something real. "You already knew."
