Okay, Stiles wanted to at least be a little bit impressive with his final project in Dr. Lecter's class, which would be why he wasn't going to write a paper or make peanut butter and jelly. Instead he had asked his dad to send one of his mother's old cookbooks and was attempting to make knedle serowo-truskawkowe. It was something she used to make for him and Scott when they were kids.

"Attempting" being the key word here. The first batch for his trial run was a burnt mess so now he was starting over, getting a fresh sheen of flour all over everything in the kitchen. It covered up the chunks of unused dough and smushed up strawberries from the first batch nicely.

At least he hadn't tried to make golabki. Then the kitchen would stink like cabbage in addition to being a mess.

"What, why?" he asked. "This batch could turn out really good!"

No, no Stiles it wouldn't. You were basically just bathing in flour at this point, not making dough.

Derek just gave him a pitying look for that. "Change your shirt."

So he could get this sorted out. LOOK, HE ONLY HAD ONE THING HE COULD DO RIGHT, OKAY?

Stiles just stared at Derek for a moment, fighting his natural urge to do the opposite of what Derek told him to do. But after a couple of moments he pressed his lips together into a thin line (maybe to stop himself from arguing) and headed to do what Derek asked, pulling his shirt off before he left the kitchen so he wouldn't track flour everywhere.

You were kind of asking for that, Derek.

Unfortunately for any squirrels, Puppy Joe picked that exact moment to pry open a cabinet and block Stiles' nubile form from their sight. Sorry he wasn't sorry.

"Not one of mine!" Derek snapped, wondering for a moment just when he lost control of his life. But, on the plus side, he was able to clean up the flour and get the mess in the bowl thrown out. Ugh, Stiles.

"What, sorry, can't hear you!" Because he was totally grabbing one of your shirts, Derek. Even if half of his own clothing resided here.

He came back a few minutes later, looking cleaner though there was still flour in his hair. "I think I have flour in my ears."

"Sanitary," Derek drawled, measuring out ingredients for the dough. "How did you even pick this if you can't cook?"

"Because it has to be something that has meaning to me," Stiles said awkwardly. "My mom used to make it for me and Scott."

Damn it, with the families being brought up!

Derek paused, hands frozen on the flour before he forced himself to continue measuring it out with way too much focus. It was like he was handling C4. Or wolfsbane.

"Are you seriously making this for me?" Stiles asked, moving closer. "Won't that count as cheating?"

"Cut up the strawberries." There, you were part of the cooking process!

"Ooookay then." He could manage that. Probably. "Thanks. Maybe I won't kill people in class now."

"Pretty sure that would get you an F." And no one wanted that.

"Please, I have never gotten an F in my life," Stiles said as he worked on chopping up strawberries without cutting a finger off. "I think I'd actually have to try to get an F in order for me to actually get one."

Derek didnt even look up as he mixed the dough with one hand, getting it to come together enough to look mostly solid.

"Food poisoning." Need he say more?

"Point taken," Stiles said, eating one of the strawberries. "Why are you so good at this crap anyway?"

"Laura and I--when we lived somewhere with an actual kitchen," Derek muttered, tossing flour onto the counter with his free hand to begin kneading the dough. The while werewolf strength probably made that so much easier for him. "Before that."

Oh, look! Almost a whole sentence about before the fire.

"Oh. That's cool." He was so bad at this, seriously. "I was banned from the kitchen at a very young age."

Derek sighed, managing not to sound dramatic for once. Look at that progress!

"Anything to do with your multiple hospital visits?"

[robinonadderall]

"Maybe some," he said with a shrug. "I was a very curious kid. I got into a lot of stuff."

And he was curiosity-free now. Really.

"My mom--" Derek started after working himself up to it. "--had patience for everything except baking."

He stared down at the dough like it would explain just why he shared that. Or had even wanted to share that.

Stiles jerked his head up towards Derek, trying not to look as surprised as he felt. It felt like Derek never shared anything like that. Hell, most of the stuff he knew about Derek's past had come from Peter.

"I can relate," Stiles said lightly. "I screwed up the first batch because I wandered off to play with Puppy Joe. I hate how much time it takes."

Derek's shoulders relaxed slightly at that before he tossed more flour on the dough to roll it out. "The recipe tells you what to do. As long as you follow that, it's hard to mess up."

Aww, he was being all insightful to his own psyche without even really meaning to!

"You don't have ADHD do you?" he asked. Because following recipes was hard when your mind was going in about fifty different directions at once.

"No. Werewolf." It made you Suetiful, Stiles.

"It was a rhetorical question," he said. "My point is that it's hard to follow instructions or stick around long enough to see a recipe through unless I've had a lot of Adderall."
