Semi-Creepy Mansion | Monday Morning

The pizza had been eaten, there might have been a child or two traumatized by Stiles' choice in movies but at least there hadn't been any injuries despite the fact it was a bunch of children inside the creeper mansion. All in all it was a pretty successful sleepover for one that Stiles was half-responsible for.

Sadly now there was a bunch of adults and one teenager to deal with a morning after. Surely this won't be awkward. Or painful. Derek was involved so it might end up being painful.

"Yeah kids have a weird view of what's comfortable." Stiles had never actually shook that part of being a kid, which explained how he could sleep anywhere. "You were a cute little kid though."

"Thanks," Jack said wryly -- he hadn't felt cute, but he supposed cute was hard to see from the inside. "I'm sure you were too, even if I didn't get to see it."

"I actually had hair back then," Stiles said, running his hand through the buzz cut he sported now. "And I was covered in band-aids and/or a cast most of the time. I guess that's sort of cute?"

"It shows an adventurous spirit?" Jack offered thoughtfully. "And pain is good for you. I'm sure people have told me that."

"Oh no, pain is never good. Pain is pain," he said. "Should be avoided whenever possible."

"... and I can't argue with that theory either," Jack said. "If you can't avoid it, at least learn something from it? Does that work?"

"That works better," he said. "I like to think there's a purpose to my clumsiness."

Jack nodded. There was something he meant to tell Stiles, what was it?

"Oh, I finished with the archaic Latin you gave me," he remembered. "I have the whole thing back at home. Mostly it's talking about kanima society."

"What, seriously?" That caught Stiles' geeky attention. "I know it's a longshot, but did it have super convenient detailed instructions on how to kill it?"

"Not in the book we have," Jack said apologetically. "I don't remember the exact words, but the gist was it's a social animal that can be used as a weapon of vengeance to kill murderers. Social in a different way from wolves, though. It wants a master, not companions."

Stiles shook his head. "That doesn't make sense, it trapped me and Derek in a pool, we haven't murdered anybody....well...nobody that didn't have it coming."

"Maybe it doesn't care whether anybody had it coming," Jack speculated. "Or maybe it wasn't trying to kill you. You said it bit; you never mentioned drowning. Or it will kill non-murderers if the master wants."

"Or I could have read it wrong, or the book could be worthless," he concluded. "But I hope not."

"That book was pretty well guarded, it can't be completely worthless," Stiles said, shaking his head. "I guess it comes down to either finding whoever the kanima is when not shifted or finding its master. Not that I have the first clue how to do that."

"Any luck tracking it by scent?" Jack asked, because he knew it would be the first thing any lycanthrope in the world would try.

"Not yet, but we haven't really made a full attempt," Stiles admitted. "The last time we saw it me and Derek were surrounded by pool water, so it probably reeked of chlorine. And also he was busy being paralyzed, so."

"It's something to try," Jack said, and frowned thoughtfully. "How did you get out of the pool?"

Trapping a paralyzed person in water sounded like a murder attempt ... but maybe not. Kanimas might not be that bright.

"We almost didn't, I was in that pool holding Derek up for almost three hours, man," Stiles said, well aware of how close a call that was. "Scott pulled us out of the water right as we were going under, it was very dramatic."

Jack's eyebrows went up. "Nice timing from Scott," he said. "And good work from you. I don't know if I could have swum for three hours, before."

If he was holding Sebastien and had to, he could have. Otherwise, no.

"I couldn't just let him die," he said. "Would have been failing my sidekick duties if I did that."
