Not So Creepy Mansion | Late Afternoon

So things since the nogitsune thing ended had been...well, very awkward. It was awkward with his father, awkward with Scott when he said he didn't feel right about going to Allison's funeral and it was especially awkward with Derek. He didn't know where they stood at the moment, but he did know he was staying in the spare bedroom. Which...wasn't good.

At least the weirdness with Derek had encouraged Stiles to catch up with Cora as soon as possible and, after explaining the odd situation, had finally gotten together everything he needed to explain that whole thing to him. Whether that would make things better or worse he didn't know.

For now he was just hanging around his new room and wondering how to approach this.

"He's stubborn like that," Stiles said. He managed to get his sneaker out of the dog's mouth but had to carry him down the stairs in order to keep it from happening again. "Thanks for coming by."

"Please, I was just glad to get out of the bar," Jack said, almost succeeding in his attempt to sound casual. "Do you know how much noise it makes when someone tries to bowl on a dance floor?"

Stiles smiled a little at that, remaining casual although he was keeping his distance. More for the sake of Jack's comfort than his own. "Everything been okay here?"

Jack hesitated before giving an accurate answer. "Well. You know. Other than not being sure if you and Derek would come home alive -- yes, it's been fine. No invading garden gnomes or whatever, thank Christ."

"Yeah I wasn't really good at keeping in touch," he admitted. "In my defense, I wasn't myself a good majority of the time."

"I heard," Jack said, and went over to sit down. "How are you feeling now, though?"

"Well one of my best friends is dead because of me, I remember killing a bunch of other people and my boyfriend is barely speaking to me," Stiles said. "So not great."

Jack winced. "No," he said, "I can't imagine you would be."

A deeply awkward pause followed as Jack tried to figure out a follow-up. Nothing helpful was coming to him.

"Sorry," he said, wincing a little. "It's just--it's been really hard the last few months. I'm not good at the positive thing at the moment."

"No, no need to apologize," Jack said quickly. "I was just trying to think of something comforting to say that wasn't a lie. I didn't come up with much."

Which had been obvious, yes.

"Who's dead?"

"Allison," he said. "I don't know if you met her before. She was Scott's girlfriend for awhile."

"I know I know the name, at least," Jack told him. "I'm sorry. That's rough. Is Scott doing okay?"

"No. Nobody is," he said. "She was sort of the glue that held everybody together, you know?"

Jack thought of Sebastien, nodded. "I've known a few people like that," he said. "It's -- you won't get over any of it, but you'll go on. You all will."

"We don't have much of a choice, do we?" he said.

"Not really, and that was a bit of a dumb thing to say," Jack admitted. "Look, I've clearly got no idea how to help -- but anything I can do, I'm here."

And not just because it let him keep an eye on Stiles.

"Thanks," he said, meaning that. "I don't really know how to help myself at the moment either. There isn't really a guide on what to do after you've been possessed and went nuts on your hometown."

"No, but I bet if you looked hard enough you'd find someone else on the island who's been through about the same thing," Jack said. "I know what you mean, though. I badly wanted a handbook my first few months as a werewolf. Never found one."

"Maybe I'll go back to therapy," he said. "I went for awhile after my mom died."

"Probably not a bad idea," Jack acknowledged. "Might be hard to tell the truth to a stranger, though. Unless they've dealt with possession before."

"I know a few people that would be able to handle it." Wasn't that an emissary's job? "If not I'll come up with euphemisms."

"You'll figure something out," Jack nodded. "So ... what else is next? Are you here for a bit?"

He nodded. "I guess so. Until school starts."

Man. That was something he didn't want to think about.

"Oh, god, that," said Jack, who hadn't wanted to think about it either. "Where are you going?"

"University of Maryland," he replied. "So not too far."
