Beacon Hills High | Two Hours Later
According to the clock on the wall it had been two hours. Stiles had been holding up Derek Hale's big paralyzed werewolf ass in a pool for two goddamn hours. His arms were sore, his legs were tired and his eyes were stinging from the chlorine in the water. He had never done this much physical activity in his life. The lizard thing hadn't left, it just kept pacing the pool and hissing at the two of them.
"I don't think I can do this for much longer," Stiles said, sounding as tired as he felt. He was grateful Derek didn't have any smartass reply for him. Stiles eyed his phone laying by the edge of the pool and knew he had to go for it. There was no one coming for them and he really couldn't hold Derek for much longer.
"Don't even think about it." How did Derek always know!?
"Will you trust me just this once?" Stiles asked. He had a plan, he did! One Derek wasn't going to particularly like, but it'd work!
"No!"
"I'm the one keeping you alive, have you noticed that?" Stiles asked.
"Yeah," Derek said. "And when the paralysis wears off, who is gonna fight this thing, you or me?"
Oh. "So that's why I've been holding you up for the past two hours?"
"Yes! You don't trust me, I don't trust you," Derek said. "You need me to survive which is why you are not letting me go!"
Stiles let Derek go.
He heard Derek yell his name once before sinking into the water, but Stiles wasn't paying attention. He was swimming to the edge of the pool with all the strength he had left. The lizard saw him coming a little too late and Stiles managed to grab his phone and get back into the pool before it could take a swipe at him.
Stiles quickly dialed Scott's number and prayed that his friend would answer the phone just this once. And lo, he did. "Scott!"
"Can't talk right now."
There was a click on the other end of the line and Stiles felt his heart drop down to his stomach. There wasn't any time to be mad, not when Derek was at the bottom of the pool. Stiles dropped his phone into the water and dove in, swimming to where Derek had sank. He grabbed a hold of Derek's shoulders and lifted him back up to the surface.
"Please tell me you got a hold of him," Derek asked after he caught his breath.
Stiles just laughed bitterly and ducked his head down where Derek couldn't see his hurt expression. Seriously, fuck his life.
A half hour later and Stiles was sure they were going to die. He was going to be found at the bottom of the pool clinging to Derek Hale. What was his father going to think? "I can't do this anymore, Derek, I need something to hold onto."
Stiles started dragging himself and Derek towards the diving board, hoping he had enough strength to grab onto it. He made it to the board but missed when he reached up, fingers slipping on the board. He and Derek sank into the water and Stiles could feel himself slipping out of consciousness when he felt claws dig into his shoulder and pull him up.
He hit the concrete around the pool hard and felt Derek land close beside him. Coughing up water and gasping for air, Stiles got up on his hands and knees to see a wolfed out Scott standing in front of him. Derek pulled himself up into a sitting position (and Stiles so wanted to ask if the paralysis was just super convenient or if he just wanted to cuddle like a creep) and they both watched as Scott took on the giant lizard.
The fight didn't last long and it was obvious that the lizard had the upper hand. It was only by pure luck that Scott got out of it alive. The lizard threw him into a window, causing the glass to shatter which turned out to be what saved their lives. Scott recovered quickly and picked up a piece of glass and held it up as a weapon. Instead of attacking, however, the lizard stopped in it's tracks and looked at the glass curiously. Stiles wasn't sure, but he could swear the creature was confused with it's own reflection.
There was a loud screeching noise and the sound of more shattering glass as the lizard jumped over Scott and out the window.
Outside in the parking lot (Lydia had driven off, not that Stiles could blame her) Scott explained that he had managed to grab a copy of the Argent beastiary. It turned out it wasn't in a book at all, Gerard Argent had it on a thumb drive. Oh those modern hunters.
Stiles was soaking wet and sore and he really wanted nothing more than to get out of there and never deal with this again, but Scott insisted on breaking out Stiles' laptop right there in the parking lot and try to find the creature. There was only one problem. The beastiary was written in--
"Is that even a language?" Stiles asked.
"How are we even supposed to figure out what this thing is?" Scott asked.
"It's called a kanima." Stiles turned to see Derek and Erica approach the car. Erica looked a bit rough, but other than being soaking wet Derek looked fine. Well of course, he hadn't had to do any work the last few hours.
"You knew the whole time?" Stiles asked.
Derek shook his head. "No, only when it was confused by it's own reflection."
"It doesn't know what it is," Scott said.
"Or who."
Stiles glared at Derek. Seriously, this shit would have been useful forever ago. "What else do you know?"
"Just stories, rumors. It's a shapeshifter like werewolves," Derek said. "But it's not right. It's like a..."
"Abomination," Stiles finished.
Derek nodded again and turned to leave with Erica, but Scott wasn't having it. "Derek, we need to work together on this, maybe even tell the Argents."
"You trust them?!" Derek hissed, facing Scott and Stiles with a glare that could probably kill.
"Nobody trusts anyone, that's the problem!" Scott shouted. "While we're here arguing about who's on what side there's something scarier and stronger and faster than us and it's killing people! And we still don't know anything about it!"
Derek frowned and turned away again. "I know one thing, when I find it, I'm gonna kill it."
Stiles rolled his eyes and slammed his laptop shut. "Well that's dramatic. And I'm pretty sure a thank you to me would've been in order but, whatever, it's not like I nearly died trying to keep him alive in a pool for two and a half hours---oh wait."
"Stiles, he's gone."
"I know that, I'm venting," Stiles said with a frown. "And I'm leaving."
"Well, okay, tomorrow we can start--"
Stiles shook his head. "Scott, no, I mean I'm going back to school."
Scott frowned. "But what about the kanima?"
"I'll work on it there, okay?" Stiles asked, sounding tired. "I will, I promise. It's a weird school, maybe there's someone who can read the beastiary. If anything big happens, call me and I'll come running."
That was what he always did, right?
