A Denny's On the Mainland | Sunday Afternoon

Apparently Derek had been blessed (heh) with other children, so it was up to Stiles to keep Claudia happy for at least part of the day. It was easier than he thought it would be, especially if he kept his own issues out of his head. He didn't want a repeat of yesterday.

So he was sitting at a table with his daughter, letting her eat her way through a stack of pancakes while he read over texts he had gotten from Derek. "I think Der--uh, Daddy's on his way here. Something about being mad at me letting you ride in the jeep...wow, wait until he finds out I let you drive it."

It was just around the parking lot! And she was only steering, he was working the gears and pedals. Perfectly safe.

[For the baby daddy and his children. And anybody else if you want to be at the nearest Denny's, sure. It's the haven of dads who don't know what to do with their children iirc from my childhood]

"I should have stayed with mom," Petra whined.

Talia smacked her arm. "Shhh, it's getting good."

"It wasn't driving," Stiles said, sitting up after deciding Derek would just track him down if he tried to escape. "She was just steering, I was the one working the pedals and shifting gears."

"I only hit the curb once!" she said proudly.

Derek looked like he was stifling the urge to clutch Claudia to his bosom chest to keep her safe from harm. Because he was. Seriously, Derek. What is with that?

"Oh my god," he muttered, looking up at the ceiling for help.

Talia offered a hand to Claudia for a high-five. "Nice one, kid."

"Hey, there's the food!" Petra said as several servers brought out enough to feed a small army.

Or three werewolves and two teenagers.

Claudia returned the high-five (even if she wasn't sure if she liked Talia) and then bounced in her seat a little at the prospect of more food. They must have spent a fortune in groceries every month.

"I had everything under control," Stiles insisted, moving stuff around on the table to make room for more food. He had no idea how they were going to eat all this.

They might need to order more, Stiles. Think about that.

"You are not allowed to do that when we actually have her," Derek hissed. Because he could make a promise of making that future real into a threat somehow.

Talia didn't even wait for it all to be set down, snagging a plate out of the server's hands to start downing it. She'd practically been fasting at Kitty's place, after all.

"He's a fun dad. And hey, he's probably not on TV, shooting people. Congrats."

"Well. Avengers," Petra muttered, digging into something that was obviously not fruit.

"Your dad shot people?" Claudia asked. That seemed like sort of a rude question to ask so she followed it up with, "My grandpa has a gun so I think he's shot people too."

"See, I'm a fun dad," Stiles said, ignoring any weird shooting talk for a moment. 'Cause how dare you tell him how to parent, Derek. "You're not allowed to be crazy overprotective when we have her either."

Were they even noticing they were saying "when" instead of "if"?

"I'm not crazy overprotective."

He was just going to ignore how both Petra and Talia were choking on their food as they laughed at that one. Because they were rude and traitors.

"Derek, last night you were about two seconds away from going to Ikea to buy her a bed with a safety railing on it." Crazy overprotective!

"It's a high bed!"

Just picture him with a baby, Stiles.

"She's a werewolf!" Stiles hissed. Because shouting that would not be a good thing. "And we're only going to have her for a few days."

Sure, bring that up.

Rude, Stiles! Now Derek was making that sad face as he watched Claudia stuff her face like she was starved. Even after eating a pile of pancakes before.

"Hey," Stiles said, nudging Derek's leg with his foot. At least he hoped that was Derek's leg. "That's a good thing. We're not ready for that, I'm only seventeen."

Derek nodded at that, forcing himself to look away from his fake future kid and down at the food.

He just really wanted family, damn it. Deal with those issues, okay? Deal.

"Trying to eat here," Talia chimed in. "No playing footsie unless you want some puking."

"Oh sorry," Stiles said, looking under the table. "I thought that was your dad's leg. You've got really beefy calves, do you know that?"

Derek snorted at that, politely tapping Stiles' leg back. And ignoring the groan of disgust from Talia.

"Eat your lunch."
