Beacon Hills | Afternoon then Evening
Stiles |
Finally, a B&E that was approved by his dad. His and Scott's entrance into the Tate house hadn't been the smoothest but at least his father seemed to be distracting Mr. Tate enough that he didn't notice anything was wrong. Malia Tate's room was almost exactly like she would have left it as a child, which Stiles found a little bit creepy, but it was useful for finding her scent. |
Scott |
Scott felt more than creepy going around and smelling a girl's stuff. Especially since it didn't seem to be all that useful. "All I'm getting is some kind of animal smell." |
Stiles |
"What kind of animal?" he asked. |
Scott |
An answering growl behind them pretty much answered that question. "...a dog." Sure enough when Scott turned there was one angry looking Rottweiler in front of them. |
Stiles |
"...hi, puppy," Stiles said softly. "Get rid of it." |
Scott |
"Me?" |
Stiles |
"Yes, you," Stiles hissed. "Glow your eyes at it, something, be the alpha." |
Scott |
"I can't," Scott said, backing up against Stiles when the dog moved closer. "I don't have control." |
Stiles |
"Okay, buddy, you're going to have to try something." Before they get eaten. Or caught. Stiles didn't know which would be worse. |
Scott |
Scott approached the dog slowly, holding out his hand a little for it to sniff. "Nice doggy?" The dog started barking. Loudly. And with no sign of stopping. |
Stiles |
Stiles gave Scott a panicked look. This was it, they were gonna get caught his dad was gonna get fired all because of a stupid dog. This is why he only hung around Puppy Joe! By some crazy stroke of luck though Mr. Tate had no interest in investigating his dog. Instead he yelled "APOLLO SHUT THE HELL UP" loudly, and then the dog scurried off. "Oh thank god," Stiles murmured. "Now hurry up, we've got to get out of here." |
Scott |
"All I'm getting is this dog." The scary, scary dog. They stayed in the room long enough for Stiles to get a picture of Malia and her sister and then the two of them snuck back out (with less of a hassle than getting back in) and met the Sheriff down the street after his interview with Tate. "I'm sorry, I tried as hard as I could. If it hadn't been so long ago I might've been able to do it." |
Sheriff Stilinski |
"It's okay, it was a long shot. In fact it was a pretty terrible idea," Sheriff Stilinski said with a frown. "I think I just ripped a wound open in that poor man. I should have never brought you guys here. I don't know what I was thinking. Thanks for trying though, all right? See you at home." He gave the two of them a sad smile before getting back into his patrol car and leaving. |
Scott |
"Aren't there a lot of cases that go unsolved?" Scott asked as he watched the patrol car drive off. |
Stiles |
"Yeah, I just think this is one he thought he could figure out right now." Or needed to figure out now, rather. |
Scott |
"Why's it so important now?" |
Stiles |
Stiles was definitely not meeting Scott's eyes when he answered. "Well he wants to be able to solve one more while he's still sheriff." |
Scott |
That did not sound good. "What do you mean still sheriff?" |
Stiles |
Stiles sighed and proceeded to tell Scott about his dad screwing over his own dad. It did not go over well. |
Stiles |
Scott was pretty pissed after Stiles told him about his dad. Stiles just hoped that Agent McCall was still in one piece when Scott was done with him. Not that he cared too much about him, but he did care about Scott not being in jail. It was another sleepless night for him. His dad was still at the office and Stiles supposed he could have headed back to Fandom but he felt like he should stay until he could see where this impeachment thing was going. He was laying in bed in his pajamas, wide awake and considering texting Derek. |
Scott |
Since Scott was a werewolf obviously ringing the doorbell or knocking on Stiles' door was not a thing that would be happening. Instead he threw open the door to Stiles' bedroom like he owned the place. |
Stiles |
To his credit, Stiles did not jump or shout. He sat up in bed and gave Scott a weird look. He usually wasn't one for the bedroom break in. "Hey, what's going on?" |
Scott |
Scott held up a flashlight. "You and me, we're gonna go out and find a body. A dead body." |
Stiles |
Well Stiles couldn't say no to that. He soon found himself in the woods with Scott, heading to where the Tate's car slid into a ravine. Yeah, Derek would so not approve of these shenanigans, and Stiles knew it. Which would be why he would wait to tell him later after it was too late to stop it. "You know if my dad's right that means there's another werewolf in town that we haven't met yet." |
Scott |
"I know," Scott said, focused on trying to the map of the woods on his phone. |
Stiles |
Stiles, meanwhile, was busy trying not to trip on tree roots. It was a full time job. "And if it turns out to be something like triplets that form into a three headed hound of hell I'm seriously not up for that." |
Scott |
"Yeah me either. Especially since I can't even control my own transformation anymore." A howl filled the air and moments later Scott was hit from behind, causing his phone to fly out of his hands and into a puddle. |
Stiles |
"Sorry, buddy," Stiles said sheepishly. "I hate coyotes so much. They sound like they're mauling some tiny helpless little animal." |
Scott |
Scott carefully scooted down a hill enough until he reached his phone. "Still works." Thanks, AT&T. |
Stiles |
"Can I see the flashlight?" Stiles said, taking it from Scott. He held it up to reveal a flipped over car at the bottom of the hill, worn and rusted from both the accident and time. "We found it." |
Scott |
"Why wouldn't they move it?" Scott asked, moving down the hill carefully until he reached the bottom. "Isn't it evidence?" |
Stiles |
"Probably too much of a pain in the ass to tow it." His slide down the hill was less than graceful but at least he didn't fall on his ass. He moved the flashlight over the car, looking for evidence. Eventually he found it in the form of claw marks on the car door. "Scott, look. See those? Animal claws would be closer together, right? A lot closer." |
Scott |
Scott nodded. "So it was a werewolf." He crouched down to investigate the inside of the car. "What's that?" |
Stiles |
Stiles got down to Scott's level until he saw what he was referring to. Careful to avoid any bits of glass or rusted metal Stiles reached in to grab the object. Which was...a creepy little baby doll. Stiles flipped it around to see if there was anything--"I'm hungry!" And yeah that was Stiles screaming like a girl over a doll talking to him. "Stupid doll!" Stiles griped. "I think I had a minor heart attack." |
Scott |
A low growl from the wooded area in front of them had Scott standing up straight again. He could barely make it out, but a pair of glowing eyes were staring at him and Stiles. "Hey, Stiles. Please tell me you see that." |
Stiles |
Stiles stood up, tucking the doll underneath one arm. "Yeah, I see it." This was not good. |
Scott |
No time to lose, Scott shot off after the glowing eyes, running at full speed and leaving Stiles in the dust. |
Scott |
"Scott, wait!" Stiles started to run after Scott, but he quickly lost sight of him. "Scott!" Stiles didn't even know if he was running in the right direction, but he was running. Better that than to run into the scary growling thing. Leave that for Scott to handle. He only stopped when he reached what looked like to be a small cave on top of a hill. Stiles knew that there was a chance he could get his face ripped off by sneaking a peek, so he really didn't want to do it without Scott. Now he really needed to find him. "Scott!" |
Scott |
They did find each other eventually. Or, you know, almost ran smack into each other and screamed like girls before realizing who it was. "I think I found something." |
Stiles |
"Me too; a cave," he said, grabbing Scott by the wrist and dragging him in that direction. "What about you?" |
Scott |
"That werewolf--it wasn't a werewolf at all. It was a coyote, one with glowing eyes," Scott said, following Stiles. "Dude, I think it was Malia Tate." |
Stiles |
"Seriously? Like a werecoyote type of deal?" Oh, why not? "The cave up here is pretty clothes to the crash site. If the coyote is Malia, she might have holed up there." |
Scott |
Scott entered the cave first with Stiles not far behind. It was far from cozy by human standards but it would be perfect for an animal looking for shelter. But there was also an unusual amount of human items in there as well. |
Stiles |
"It's got to be her den," Stiles said, lifting up a blue windbreaker. "Did you see this? It's Malia's, it's the same one she was wearing in the photo." |
Scott |
Scott picked up the scraps of a stuffed animal. "We shouldn't be here. She's not gonna come back, man, we just invaded her home. Our scent's gonna be everywhere." |
Stiles |
Oh goddammit. "Can you track her now? Do you think you've got her scent?" |
Scott |
"Maybe, but I'm better at this when I'm a full wolf," Scott said. "I'm still worried if I do it, I won't be able to turn back." And that made him feel useless. "I tried calling Derek for help but he's not answering." Scott wasn't even sure where to find him either. "If I can't get to Derek we're going to have to find somebody else to help. This is basically a crime scene, right? I think it might be a little out of my boss' league." |
Stiles |
"More like my dad's," Stiles said, already getting out his phone. |
Sheriff Stilinski |
It didn't take long for Sheriff Stilinski to show up, along with a handful of investigators. The sheriff took time to inspect the cave before coming out of it with Malia's coat in his hand. "You sure it was her?" he asked once he had Scott and Stiles away from where anybody else could hear them. |
Scott |
Scott nodded. "I looked her right in the eyes, and they glowed like mine." |
Stiles |
"Makes sense, dad." Sure it did. Perfect sense. |
Sheriff Stilinski |
Stiles, please stop talking. "But it wasn't a girl, it was a four legged coyote, right?" |
Stiles |
Stiles rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "Well, yeah, that's the part we don't exactly have figured out yet." |
Scott |
"But if it was a full moon and she did change while her mom was driving then anything could have happened." Even crazy werecoyote things! |
Stiles |
"Horrible things could have happened. Ripping, shredding, tearing, things." He could go on! Oh he could go on. |
Scott |
Scott nodded. "Which is probably what caused the accident." |
Stiles |
"Think about it dad, alright?" Stiles continued, noting the unimpressed look on his father's face. "They're driving, Malia starts to change, she starts to lose control, the mom crashes and everybody dies." |
Scott |
"Except Malia." |
Stiles |
"She blames herself, goes off into the woods and eventually becomes trapped inside the body of a coyote." Made perfect sense! |
Sheriff Stilinski |
"That makes sense," the sheriff said, nodding for a moment. "In a Chinese folktale!" Ah, the Stilinski sarcasm. "Boys, this is insane! I need this kept quiet. I don't want anybody hearing about this; I especially don't want Mr. Tate hearing about this." He seemed to notice one person wasn't listening to his lecture. "Scott? Scott!" |
Scott |
"Sorry," Scott said, trying to act like he wasn't hallucinating about himself attacking a young girl. Because he wasn't. Really. "What were you saying?" |
Sheriff Stilinski |
There would have been such a lecture for you, McCall, if a car hadn't pulled up just then. Sheriff Stilinski sighed when he saw Agent McCall and Tate get out of said car. "Aw, hell..." Putting on his business face rather than his lecturing father one, the sheriff approached Tate and held out Malia's jacket. "Mr. Tate..." |
Mr. Tate |
Mr. Tate took the jacket out of the sheriff's hands. "It's hers. It's Malia's." |
Agent McCall |
Agent McCall nodded. "Wait here." |
Scott |
Scott tried to block his father before he headed up to the cave. "Dad--" |
Agent McCall |
"I'll talk to you in a minute," he said. "I wouldn't mind hearing about how your mom's okay with you running around the woods this late." He pushed past Scott and Stiles and headed toward the cave with Sheriff Stilinski following at his heels. |
Stiles |
Stiles sighed. "Well what do we do now?" |
Scott |
"Nothing we can do," Scott said, shrugging. "Malia could be anywhere now." |
