Stiles had not stayed last night during the full moon shenanigans. He felt like it'd be too awkward considering last week. So he put up a circle of mountain ash, made sure everybody was going to be fine and then went back to the dorms because apparently he felt bad enough for Ms. Blake that he actually completed an essay on Heart of Darkness for her. What a whipped not-student he was.

But he was back bright and early Monday 'cause he got the feeling Jackson would like to escape as soon as possible. He broke the circle of mountain ash and then let himself inside.

"Circle's broken, you can leave now!" Stiles shouted, picking up Puppy Joe and then heading into the kitchen to make himself coffee. You people owed him coffee.

"He does. With lots of icing flowers," Jack agreed. "And the lyrics to the Golden Girls theme on the top of it."

"It's not easy," Derek admitted slowly. "I still feel what comes over you and Jackson."

He just had years of practice ignoring it.

"Eighteen months," Jack said, and let out a whoosh of air at the mental calculation. It sounded both too long and too short to be correct. "But I'm a different species from you. You might learn faster."

"Does having us around make it harder?" Jack wondered, genuinely curious on the point.

It was a legitimate question, although his poor attitude made it sound like he didn't mean it as one.

"That's different." Really it was.

"Hmh." Well, that was about half reassuring. Mostly not. "Good to know."

"You can change without the draw of the moon," Derek replied, letting his fingernails become claws as an example. "Being able to do it at will and then change back will help."

"No," he said almost too quickly. He looked away, examining the coffee pot. "A pack helps."

"No it's really not," Stiles said. "Is there something you particularly want to know? Apparently I'm in a sharing mood, according to you."

Don't put him on the spot like this! He had all the questions that would never be asked!

"By the way," Stiles took out a vial of pretty purple powder from his pocket. "This is for Mike. Just in case."

"Not sure how, but glad to help," Jack answered. He didn't find it terribly reassuring himself.

Derek looked so broken right then that Jack had a sudden strange urge to hug him. "I like having a pack too," he admitted. "Didn't expect to appreciate it this much."

Even if it was fragmented. Even if Jackson wasn't even sure he was in the pack yet.

Derek looked up, searching Jack's face for any duplicity there. "Hopefully Jackson will think so too."

"Jackson, Jack, any other rogue werewolves that come to visit," Stiles said. "Not you, Mr. Control."

"I'm not sure it will affect Jack the same way," he said once he was satisfied with that answer. And a lot of staring at Stiles.

This was not quite news, but he honestly hadn't given it much thought, even with having dealt so much with various things around McCall over the last year or two.

He shrugged. A little tensely. "And how do I learn to do that?"
